ABSTRACT: Brandberg Mountain is the highest mountain of Namibia, which is well known for the distinct ecosystem and ancient rock arts. In March 2007, during my ecological-anthropological fieldwork in Namibia, I climbed this mountain, observed the richness of endemic plants and animals, and visited the splendid rock-paintings near the peak. The paintings found on the wall of rock caves are estimated to be more than 10,000 years old. They clearly described the natural environment and human activities in the ancient time. Today, the San hunter-gatherers are not living in the mountain area but in the desert, and rock-painting is no longer practiced. The ancient rock-painting in Mt. Brandberg is not only a historic heritage but also a great textbook for studying the interaction between human and nature.
