International Meeting of First Human Settlements in Eurasia

Event introduction: Human origins are found in Africa, and it was around 1,8 millions years ago that humans started their dispersion out of Africa to settle down in the Eurasian continent. The first Eurasian settlements are placed in Dmanasi (Georgia), being the Homo georgicus the first Eurasian settlers. Afterwards, around 1,2 milions of years ago, some Homo antecessor arrived in the Spanish area of Atapuerca, leading the migration of a new population. This population might be crucial in understanding European early migrations, since a new culture was developed in response to the climatic variations of the time. The meeting focused on some of the most relevant factors – such as climate, topography, biota or socio-cultural environment – regarding Eurasian early migrations. In addition broad range of the most advanced methodologies and their interpretations for the study of human evolution and migrations were likewise discussed.

Key words: Human evolution; Atapuerca site; Homo antecessor; Eurasia peopling
