Abstract: Sino-Tibetan is a large linguistic family distributing in Southern East Asia, comprises hundreds of languages, and can be further classified into Sinitic, Tibeto-Burman, Daic, Hmong-Mien, Austronesian, and Austro-Asiatic subfamilies. By the time, there are different opinions of the members and structure of this family. Furthermore, the phonetic inventory of Sino-Tibetan is seldom studied. I have studied many languages within this family, and found many clues to the phonetic inventory of the proto-Sino-Tibetan, e.g., syllabic structure, consonants, vowels, origin of tones. I would also like to discuss about the method of proto-Sino-Tibetan reconstruction and the nomenclature of the family.

Key words: Sino-Tibetan, Phonetic inventory, theory and method of proto language reconstruction
